The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) is a prominent biomedical research institution located at the University of Ghana. The NMIMR is dedicated to advancing healthcare and scientific knowledge. The Institute was established in 1979 to honour the legacy of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, a renowned Japanese scientist.  

NMIMR’s mission is Improving the health and wellbeing of Ghanaians and mankind through focused and relevant quality biomedical research, human resource development and support of national public health activities. With a commitment to quality research, NMIMR plays a pivotal role in contributing to the understanding and management of various health challenges. The institute’s vision extends globally, aspiring to be a leading global medical research centre. 

The overall mandate of the Institute is to conduct research into diseases of public health importance, train postgraduate students in biomedical sciences and support the public health programmes of the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service. Specifically, this involved: 

  • Conducting research into communicable and non-communicable diseases. 
  • Providing training opportunities in biomedical research for undergraduate and postgraduate students. 
  • Providing high-end laboratory diagnostic and monitoring and surveillance services in support of national public health 

Through its multifaceted approach, NMIMR aims not only to address current health concerns but also to shape the future of medical research, education, and public health practice. As a beacon of excellence in the field, NMIMR stands at the forefront of scientific inquiry, making significant strides in biomedical research to improve the overall health outcomes for communities in Ghana and beyond.
